Massachusetts baseball visits the Citadel for three games beginning Friday

Setting the scene
University of Massachusetts baseball hits the road to play The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina for three games at the Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park. The first leg will be on Friday 15 March at 17:00 and the second leg is scheduled for 14:00 on Saturday 16 March. The two teams close out the weekend series on Sunday, March 17, with the first game scheduled for 1:00 p.m. All three contests will be televised on ESPN+.

UMass holds a 3-8 overall record on the season, while the Citadel is 11-5 on the year.

Summary in a minute
Massachusetts lost a midweek game against Holy Cross, 21-5, on Wednesday. Jack Beverly led the team in hits with two while adding two RBI. Nolan Thich collected two RBI while Kyle High scored two runs on the evening.

Go, go, and it’s gone
Massachusetts has hit nine home runs in 11 games played by six Minutemen. Mike Gervasi leads the team with three while Carter Hanson followed with two for the year. run beverly Austin Burgess and Justin Blumenthal all hit a homer on the season.

Gervasi registered his first long ball of the year in the season opener against Bucknell before hitting his second and third in back-to-back games. He hit his second homer in game three of the Bucknell series before hitting his third in game one at No. 13 Virginia. Hanson also hit a home run in Game One of the Bucknell series and picked up his second win in Game 2 of No. 13 Virginia, 10-5. Thichy recorded his only home run in the final game against Bucknell.

Burgess hit his first home run of the year in Elon’s second game, while Beverly and Blumenthal hit their first in Elon’s third game. Beverley’s homer marked the first of his career.

On a roll…
The Thirteen Minutemen are riding an ongoing hitting streak so far this season. Matt Travisano sits atop the leaderboard with 10 games, followed by Beverley with eight. Kevin Skagerlind is on a five game streak while Carter Hanson and Gervasi are on a three game streak. Burgess, Hoog and Tichy are riding a two-game hitting streak as Blumenthal and Jake Swerdloff are on a one game streak.

Hanson leads the team with an 11-game hitting streak, the longest for the Minutemen, and Skagerlind and Travisano both have 10-game hitting streaks. Michael Toth and Beverley follow close behind with eight, as Mark Willey is on a four game streak. Gervasius and Braden Sullivan are on a three game streak while Tichy, Jack PetersHoog and Burgess have two games. Ryan Pistone currently on a one game streak.

[Multi]play games
Through 11 games, UMass has had a strong showing with multi-hit games as the Minutemen have increased their multi-hit performances to 26. Travisano leads the output with five that include one four-hit game, while Beverly has four games. Three players have had three multi-hit contests, with Hanson, Skagerlind and Gervasi recording three hits in one game. Tichy and Blumenthal totaled two multi-hit games, while four Minutemen had one game as Toth put together a four-hit performance in one contest.

Massachusetts also totaled 17 multi-RBI games, led by Hanson, Beverly and Gervasi with three, including three RBI runs for Hanson and one four RBI game for Gervasi. Tichy and Burgess have two multi-RBI contests, with Burgess having one three-RBI game so far this season. Four players have recorded one multi-RBI game, including Skagerlind, Sullivan and Jake Given with three RBIs in one game.

Meet the Minutemen
A solid mix of returnees and newcomers make up the 2024 edition of the Minutemen as the team begins its 141st season. Nineteen members of the team return from the 2023 campaign, while 16 players join for their first season in Amherst, including eight freshmen and eight transfers.

Keeping it in the family
The 2024 season marks the 58th consecutive campaign in which Massachusetts baseball will have an alumnus of the flagship campus as its head coach. Seventh-year captain Matt Reynolds is a dual graduate (2005, ’10G) and is preceded by fellow alumni Mike Stone ’82 (1988-2017) and Dick Bergquist ’57 (1967-87).

It is the second-longest active streak in Division I baseball. Only BYU (62 consecutive seasons) has been led by an alumnus on its campus for longer.

On deck
Massachusetts continues with two midweek races. The Minutemen visit Norfolk State on Tuesday, March 19 at 3:00 PM in Norfolk, Virginia before taking on UMES on Wednesday, March 20 at 3:00 PM in Princess Anne, Maryland.
