Neighbors of the New York police officer accused of shooting his wife and children before turning the gun on himself have described them as the “perfect American family”.

Bronxville Police Department Sergeant Watson Morgan, 49, was found dead of self-inflicted gunshot wounds along with his wife Ornella Morgan, 43, and their two young sons on Saturday.

Speaking to the New York Post, a neighbor described them as the “textbook perfect American family.”

“We are in shock. Everyone in this community is shocked,” the neighbor added.

Officers conducted a welfare check on the family home in New City, an affluent suburb of Bronxville, when Morgan failed to show up for work.

A gun was recovered and all four were pronounced dead at the scene.

“Sergeant Morgan did not show up for his evening shift last night and our police department contacted the Clarkstown Police Department in his hometown who made the discovery,” Bronxville police said in a statement.

“Our hearts go out to Sergeant Morgan’s extended family. Our thoughts and prayers are also with his family from the Bronxville Police Department.

The sudden tragedy left neighbors in the quiet cul-de-sac.

A woman, who declined to be named, said: “The kids were always here playing outside and their mum was just the nicest person you’d ever meet.”

Ornella Morgan was a teacher in the New York public education system.

The couple’s sons, ages 10 and 12, attended school in the Clarkstown Central School District.

The 10-year-old was a student at Laurel Plains Elementary School, while the 12-year-old went to Felix Festa Middle School.

The City of Clarkstown announced that grief counselors will be available for students in the area.

He was promoted to sergeant in 2016 and was expected to retire from the police department in March.

The 49-year-old’s social media profiles are filled with photos of the family grinning as they relax and watch baseball games.

Watson’s last Facebook post from 2022 shows him and his oldest son attending a concert at the Barclays Center.

“As we try to make sense of this unimaginable tragedy, our hearts break for the family involved in this devastating murder-suicide in Clarkstown,” said Rockland County Executive Ed Day.

The county medical examiner will perform autopsies while the investigation continues.
