  • A big crowd awaits Inter Miami at Arrowhead Stadium, home of the Kansas City Chiefs. Will Lionel Messi play?
  • The Philadelphia Union, MLS’ last remaining undefeated team, visit Mercedes-Benz Stadium to play Atlanta United.
  • FC Los Angeles are fielding their former goalkeeper, Maxime Crepeau, when they take on the Portland Timbers.

Major League Soccer’s only undefeated team, the Philadelphia Union, hit the road for a tough matchup with Atlanta United at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Sunday.

The opening match of the weekend takes place at Providence Park, where the Portland Timbers host Los Angeles FC on Saturday (4:45 p.m. ET on FOX and Apple TV). In the match, Timbers goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau faces his former team. Crepo broke his leg during LAFC’s epic 2022 MLS Cup win over the Philadelphia Union.

Meanwhile, Inter Miami CF have to kick the dust after the club’s aspirations to become a Western Hemisphere ‘superclub’ suffered a major blow this week. After a spectacular CONCACAF Champions Cup battle against Liga MX powerhouse Monterrey, a flustered Lionel Messi and Inter Miami will travel to face Sporting Kansas City at Arrowhead Stadium, regular home of the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs. (Although SKC’s predecessor, the Kansas City Wizards played home games at the venerable ballpark from 1996-2007.)

MLS Match of the Week: Atlanta United vs. Philadelphia Union

  • Date and time: Sunday at 2:30pm ET
  • TV/Streaming Info: FOX/MLS Season Pass

If Inter Miami can take any solace from their CONCACAF Champions Cup debacle against Monterrey, they can look no further than the team they are currently tied with in the Eastern Conference standings. The Philadelphia Union were eliminated from the continental tournament with a 6-0 loss to Pachuca of Liga MX. After opening the MLS regular season with two draws before being eliminated from the Concacaf Champions Cup, the Union have won three of four (with another draw in the mix) to remain the only unbeaten team in the league. Julian Carranza scored four goals in that period.

Atlanta United outscored their opponents 9-1 in the friendly confines of Mercedes-Benz Stadium, where the Five Stripes will host the Union on Sunday. Atlanta’s Giorgos Djakoumakis’ five goals are just one behind Golden Boot teammates Christian Arango of Real Salt Lake and Lewis Morgan of the New York Red Bulls. However, Dzaukumakis did not play in last week’s 1-1 draw with New York City due to a bruised knee.
