Snow on Oregon coast, travel issues tonight through Monday, officials watch out

(Manning, Ore.) – Parts of Highway 26 in the Oregon Coast Range are a mess this Sunday evening with more than 500 feet of snow and there has already been at least one road closure. There is a chance of beach snowflakes being reported in some areas as well as lots of lightning and thunder along the coastline. ODOT has issued a driving weather advisory for Highway 26, and the National Weather Service (NWS) has a winter weather advisory for the Oregon Coast.

It’s shaping up to be a dramatic day — with even a chance of snowflakes in the Portland area, though they’re not expected to stick around.

Earlier Sunday, the intersection of Highway 47 and Highway 26 was closed for a time due to a downed power line. Various vehicles slid off the road and Washington County assisted several vehicles that crashed on snow-covered roads.

The trouble is expected to last until the morning: it is best to wait to travel over the coastal range.

According to ODOT and NWS:

“Additional snow accumulations of 2 to 5 inches likely by Monday morning.” Plan on slippery road conditions. Snow accumulation will vary with distance and elevation due to the drizzly nature of the precipitation.”

The NWS said the advisory was in effect until Monday afternoon.

A continued snow/rain mix is forecast for the Coast Range throughout the week, with more snow chances Wednesday and Thursday, though later in the day snow levels will exceed any threat level for the highest elevations on Highway 26. Although this could still have a snow/rain mix through friday.

Call 5-1-1 or see TripCheck.com for updated conditions.

Thunder and lightning put on a show in several Oregon coastal cities, including Newport. Temperatures are near freezing in many areas of the northern half of the coast and will drop further overnight. Along the south coast, areas like Coos Bay or Gold Beach remain seasonally normal and actually look sunny and mild later in the week.
