New movies and shows to stream this weekend: Mary and George, The area of interest, sugar + More
The bravest thing in the story of Mary and George Villiers is that it is all true: in 1614, George Villiers, urged by his mother Mary, sought to become the “favourite” of the new king of England. The new Starz series Mary and George is a wild ride that details their rise to power and wealth. On Apple TV+, Colin Farrell stars in the highly anticipated new detective series sugarand on Max you can catch Sandra Hüller and Christian Friedel as the casually evil Nazis Rudolf and Hedwig Höss in The area of interest.
The action takes place in the 17th century, Mary and George is the true story of a woman named Mary Villiers (Julianne Moore) who seeks power and wealth through her son George (Nicholas Galitzin) who climbs the social ladder by getting into bed with the sovereign, King James VI (Tony Curran ). Through intrigue and seduction, the Villiers became some of the most influential members of the royal court. The series premieres on Friday, April 5, with new episodes every week.
One of the most talked about movies this year is the Oscar winner The area of interest. Directed by Jonathan Glazer (who won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay), The area of interest starring Christian Friedel as Nazi commander Rudolf Höss, head of the Auschwitz concentration camp. Rudolph and his wife Hedwig (Sandra Hüller) live in a home that borders the camp, and the film captures the dark juxtaposition of their family’s idyllic life, which continues despite the atrocities committed in the immediate vicinity of their home.
New on Apple TV+: sugar
Apple TV+ sugar is a private detective series set in Los Angeles and stars Colin Farrell as John Sugar, a detective hired to investigate the disappearance of the granddaughter of a legendary Hollywood producer. The stellar ensemble also includes Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Anna Gunn, Amy Ryan and James Cromwell. Two episodes of Sugar will premiere on Friday, with new episodes dropping each week after that.
