A UK cop has scolded a group of American tourists after they were caught harassing a royal guard outside Buckingham Palace in a now-viral video.
Footage posted on social media shows a group of young girls taunting the guard by loudly shouting several different names as they try to guess the guard’s name correctly.
“Henry…Sherlock, Sherlock Holmes,” some of them can be heard in the TikTok clip posted on Monday, with a man also joining in on their shenanigans.
“Toby, Montgomery,” the man shouts.
Two police officers, noticing the commotion, appear from the side, with one cop approaching the guard being taunted by the group of tourists.
The tourists cheered and jumped up and down when the cop approached and got the guard to talk, but then they learned a harsh lesson.
“These soldiers are serving their country. They take their jobs seriously,” the cop told the tourists. “They are responsible for safeguarding this facility, they are not to be mocked.”
“I appreciate you having fun, he’s not. He has a long day, he has many hours to do. It’s tiring, it’s exhausting, and you’re driving him mad. We do not appreciate this and I will ask you to leave the facility,” the cop added.
The role of the Royal Guard is to protect the royal residence and watch for any possible threat or danger. Guards are generally prohibited from directly interacting with or responding to tourists, according to travel site Londontopia.com.
As soon as the policeman directs the tourists to leave the premises, the group obeys the order and go on their way together.
Viewers of the video applauded the officer for spotting the guard’s mistreatment as he reprimanded the tourists for their behavior.
“The English police are very patient and reasonable compared to many countries. Respect,” read one comment.
“The officer handled it like a champ,” a man replied.
American commentators also ripped the young tourists, even apologizing on their behalf.
“As an American, I am literally appalled by their behavior. My sincerest apologies for the lack of respect,” read one response.
“I want to apologize for their behavior. Please forgive their arrogance and stupidity. Most American tourists respect the Royal Guard and their service,” said another.
“They think they’re in Disney Land and he’s dressed as a character to laugh and play for them,” one joked.
Guards have been known to take matters into their own hands. Many videos on social media show them yelling at tourists for going too far in their communication.
Last April, a royal guard at Buckingham Palace scared a tourist and screamed in her face after she tried to take a picture with him.
“Don’t touch the King’s Lifeguard!” the soldier yelled, startling the woman as she clutched her chest in fear as she retreated.
