Independent music production studio: Seqtrak
The Yamaha SEQTRAK combines a step sequencer, drum machine, synthesizer, sampler and mixing functionality in one compact, battery-powered unit that also integrates a microphone and speaker. This set of features makes it the perfect travel companion for musicians and producers who want to be able to capture ideas wherever they are. The foundation of making music with Seqtrak is the sequencer with its dynamic and intuitive controls. There are six pattern slots for each track that can be easily switched to introduce more variety. The sequencer and its tabs mark the grid on which the different sounds can be placed, and are the basis for recordings, live performances and production on the fly.
Beats in the pocket: the drum section
The first section of Yamaha SEQTRAK sounds is the drum section, featuring seven tracks: kick, snare, clap, two hi-hats, and two percussion sounds. Each of these tracks can be loaded with high-quality sounds from the extensive library. The sound library currently contains over 2000 sounds across all categories of SEQTRAK instruments and will be further expanded with additional sound packs. It is also possible to add samples of other users via the Seqtrak app. These sounds are then arranged on the step sequencer with its up to 128 steps, 16 of which are displayed via the face step buttons.
Harmonies and Melodies: The synth and sample section
The Yamaha Seqtrak provides an impressive sounding synth section. Three synths and samples can be used simultaneously. The first two synths use Yamaha’s highly versatile, 128-note polyphonic AWM2 engine. The third synth is called DX and brings back the colorful sounds of this classic Yamaha Synth with a four operator FM engine.
All synths can be switched between mono, poly and chord modes to suit specific track requirements. Seven keys are available for playing melodies or chords, with selectable scale and key. In keyboard mode, the serial follower keys become a chromatic keyboard. An arpeggiator is even available.
The sampler maps one sample sound to each of the keys, which can again be selected from the library. Alternatively, SEQTRAK allows recording and sampling of individual sounds, either from an external source, via USB, resampling or with the built-in microphone. The amount of variety that Seqtrak provides is remarkable, especially considering its compact form factor.
Ear Candy and Lacquer: The Sound Design Section
All preset sounds in Yamaha Seqtrak can be further edited in the sound design section on the right. Parameters such as pitch, volume, pan, attack, decay or filter can be edited, depending on the selected sound. Additional options come in the form of the effect section, which allows adding reverb, delay, modulation and more. Adding distortion to a kick or compressing the overall mix is right here in the unit. No additional peripherals required, Seqtrak can see a song from its initial idea to its final sound design.
Dive deeper: the Seqtrak app
Yamaha invested a lot of thought into the design of Seqtrak’s workflow, finding that delicate balance between intuition and depth. The SEQTRAK app provides even wider editing capabilities, giving access to all parameters of effects, drums and synths. The app even includes a viewer that makes it easy to create interesting videos with animated objects that react to the music.
