100 years ago

March 16, 1924: In all, more than 2,700 “tramps” have entertained at Bloomington’s “tramp house” in the city yard since January 1, 1924, according to the police station’s “tramp book.” The number of men applying for accommodation each night is almost as reliable an indication of weather conditions as a barometer.

75 years ago

March 16, 1949: The 25 unused school buildings and lots in Unit District 5 will be auctioned off April 11-14, it was announced. The authority to sell the property was given to the board by a vote of 189 to 17 in an election held on February 11.

March 16, 1974: Page Jewelry Co. is going out of business, but that’s not the obituary for the store at 201 N. Main. The store will continue to house a jewelry business, the store manager and staff will remain the same. All that will change is the name of the business and some of the merchandise that will be offered.

25 years ago

March 16, 1999: More of the Kickapoo Nation will return to McLean County May 22-23 for the second annual Kickapoo Nation Tribal Village Pow Wow. Members of the Lexington High School History Club went through statewide channels to qualify the Grand Village site to receive a 100-word plaque that will be dedicated on the first day of the event.
