The biggest hair trends for summer 2024, from Zendaya’s midi to Taylor Swift’s fringe

Hairstyles and haircuts for the upcoming seasons include twists on classics, updates on last season’s looks, and sleek Y2K variations and timeless favorites.

The pixie cut is given a modern makeover in the velvety styles of Florence Pugh and Lupita Nyong’o, while the never-out-of-style bob has been reinvented in the Italian version worn by Penelope Cruz, Hailey Bieber and more.

Fringe is front and center with two versions framing famous faces—the curtain fringe and the eyelash fringe—while Beyoncé’s recent turn to country music shines a spotlight not only on the beat, but also on the Texas hair trend that accompanies it .

Here are the eight biggest and most popular hair trends for spring/summer 2024.

The Italian bean

The style remains chin-length, eschewing the longer bobs of last year, but the traditional sleekness is gone in favor of choppier ends for a livelier look.

“Texture, volume and clean mob woman vibes characterize this style, which is a softer, layered alternative to the sleeker ‘French bob,'” says Sam Carpenter, hairstylist and educator at Eideal. “It’s best for thicker hair and people who want less maintenance. With regular trims, you can maintain this style for the long term.”

Adds Jaja Jones, founder of The Den Salon Dubai: “It gives off an old-money vibe with its effortlessly chic look.”

Fringe curtain

As seen on: Maren Morris and Ayo Edebiri

“Curtain fringes serve as the perfect complement for anyone who wears their hair up,” says Kat Hawkes, owner of Salon 971. “The versatile fringe style works for all face shapes.”

Country singer Morris and The bear actress Edebiri has been spotted wearing the style – which hasn’t waned in popularity since the 1970s. Also known as the “Farah Fawcett fringe,” the look works with voluminous hair or a sleeker style like Edebiri’s.

“Curtain fringes are perfect for women who want a change without making a complete extreme hair change,” says Jones.

Texas hair

As seen on: Beyonce and Miley Cyrus

Not for shrinking violets, Texas hair is big, bouncy and bold. Thanks to Beyoncé’s recent forays into country music, the hairstyle Dolly Parton has sported for decades has been given a modern makeover.

“It’s the biggest trend right now,” says Carpenter. “This big bold look is synonymous with pumped-up volume, but should be reserved for those who want high-maintenance hair, as you’ll need weekly blowouts and lots of product to keep the style looking good.”

Long layers

As seen on: Priyanka Chopra, Emma Roberts, Sabrina Carpenter, Vanessa Hudgens and Camilla Morrow

“Long layers in hairstyles involve cutting hair at different lengths to add texture, movement and volume while maintaining length,” says Hawkes.

A shift from last year’s longer, single-length styles, also called “waterfall layers,” they create a cascading effect, adding volume.

“It’s suitable for most hair lengths and thicknesses, but talk to your stylists as they’ll know the best way to create a flattering version given your hair type and lifestyle,” says Carpenter.

The pixie cut

As seen on: Florence Pugh, Lupita Nyong’o, Emma Corinne, Zoe Kravitz and Winnie Harlow

Supermodels and stars of the big and small screen wear countless variations on the classic cut. The shortest is worn by Pugh, Nyong’o and Corrin, whose slightly grown locks are referred to as the “velvet hairstyle”.

“This style best suits a face shape that’s more angular in profile and has pixie-style features,” says Jones. “It looks great on oval faces as well as round and heart-shaped faces.”

Eyelash fringes

As seen on: Taylor Swift, Kim Kardashian and Kelly Clarkson

The style gets its name from the length of the lashes, which can be cut across or with a more graduated cut. Also known as the “Birkin bangs” after French actress Jane Birkin, who wore the style, the look suits thicker hair, which will reduce the chance of fringes separating.

“It can be styled by blow-drying while wet without a brush, which gives it a soft flow and ensures it sits naturally on the forehead,” says Jones.

Hawkes adds, “Birkin bangs add a textured rock girl vibe. If you want a finished but undone look, this is the style to go for.”

The mussel

As seen on: Claire Danes, Zendaya, Rihanna and Sydney Sweeney

The long bob (aka ‘lob’) of 2023 has evolved into the midi cut for the new seasons.

“It’s all about texture and that bouncy blow-dry,” says Carpenter. “It can be great for finer hair if you have the right volumizing product to support the cut.”

One of the easiest looks to maintain, falling between the chin and the shoulder, it offers the flexibility of a shorter look, with the ability to tie it back if needed.

Jones says, “It’s a popular choice for those who want a balanced and flattering look.”

The butterfly cut

As seen on: Hailee Steinfeld and Addison Rae

“The butterfly hairstyle has a different look, the layers create dimension and movement reminiscent of cascading wings,” says Hawke. “One key feature is the raised fringe on the curtain, which gives it an updated and stylish touch.”

The perfect face-framing style, Jones calls it “the modern Rachel,” adding sophistication to longer locks.
