2014 Godzilla it was grounded in reality (perhaps too much so) and to a lesser extent it was Kong: Skull Island. MonsterVerse has only just begun to embrace its wackier side Godzilla: King of the Monstersbut later I went completely crazy Godzilla vs. Kong.
It was originally expected to be the final chapter of the MonsterVerse, but its success led to the return of director Adam Wingard for this month Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. While no follow-up has been announced, the director has confirmed (via SFFGazette.com) that he intends to return for a third installment.
“The whole idea that if you’ve done two movies, maybe you should go ahead and do a third because, like you said, there’s a trilogy there,” Wingard tells Discussing Film. “I definitely think there’s more story to it and I think I have more story to tell. But it just depends on how [Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire] does and how things are shaped.”
“I know that sounds like a stupid diplomatic answer [Laughs]. But the truth is, to be completely honest with you, I have more story to tell with these monsters and I know where I would go with it. I would be very excited to be able to come back for another one if things work out!”
In a separate interview with CBR, Wingard finally explained how Godzilla x Kong: The New EmpireThe title of must be pronounced.
“I’m surprised, now that I look back on it, that no one has ever used an x in their title like this before, at least to my knowledge,” he explains. “It comes from the abbreviation of x, which stands for collaboration, like there are a lot of shoe companies that do special collaborations with artists and people like that.”
“It kind of grew out of that and obviously it’s just pronounced Godzilla Kong, but I tend to say GxK all the time because I think it sounds cool,” Wingard adds. “The last film was GvK, so it just helps tie that in.”
We had a battle between the title characters and next is a team fight. It’s hard to say where things might go from here, though kaiju fans have embraced Wingard’s vision for the MonsterVerse and the strange places he continues to take it.
